How to Apply Epoxy on Linoleum

Some people hesitate about applying an epoxy coating over a linoleum floor. However, before you consider alternatives to using epoxy on linoleum, rest assured that it works well, is easy to apply, and looks wonderful when finished. Not to mention - you save a lot of money by using epoxy coating instead of replacing the flooring!

Epoxy application on linoleum floors requires a number of steps for maximum quality and efficiency, but it is not a difficult process.

Do I need to remove linoleum before applying epoxy to my floor?

No, as long as the linoleum is still safely attached to the concrete below it, you can put an epoxy coating on top easily. Most people do not realize how easy it is to apply epoxy on linoleum. Paying a professional is not necessary. If the linoleum is in good condition, it is a project you can complete yourself. We have outlined the steps and the tools you will need for a successful project!

Preparing Linoleum for Epoxy Coating

First, inspect your floors for scratches and damages. The floor does need to be in good condition, so you will need to repair damage prior to adding the epoxy coating. Next, the existing floor needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Use a brush and a heavy-duty cleaner to scrub it down. You want to be sure the linoleum is free of grease or grime. If the linoleum still appears glossy after scrubbing, the remaining wax needs to be removed. If this is the case, a wax stripping product will do the trick.

The next step is to sand the floors aggressively and create a rough surface while removing any traces of wax or paint splatters. A good sanding produces the ideal texture for epoxy adherence.
